Uganda is arguably the best place in Africa to view primate diversity, including populations of rare chimpanzees and mountain gorillas, both of which are of highest conservation priority. This stunning original 9×12” watercolor painting of a chimp by artist Walt Anderson is now available for a minimum donation of $975. $500 of the donation will benefit frontline communities of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which Walt has visited and has supported with other original paintings.

Walt is an accomplished author, wildlife artist, photographer, lecturer, and expedition guide who taught environmental studies courses for 27 years for Prescott College in Arizona. He is a Signature Member of Artists for Conservation, a group of professional wildlife artists who also have contributed significantly to conservation work through their art. His wildlife paintings have been juried into many shows and are in private collections around the world.

Artist Statement

My goal as an artist is to interpret an organism with love, respect, and fidelity to essence. I love the delicacy of watercolor, which, though typically unforgiving as a medium, allows me to depict the softness of feather and the hardness of beak and claw equally well. I am now experimenting with other media, as the artistic process is enriched by media diversity the way a forest or grassland is enhanced through biotic diversity. Marvel at the beauty of an animal well portrayed, and you can for a moment escape the confusion of modern society and connect with something much bigger and grander.

“The Stare: Chimpanzee” honors one of our closest primate relatives. I was fortunate to have close-up
encounters with wild chimpanzees in Uganda, truly a life-changing experience, and since that time, I
have been involved in conservation/social activism helping the Batwa pygmies in Uganda, who were
unjustly evicted from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where they had lived close to nature for
millennia. Helping these people helps protect chimpanzees, mountain gorillas, and other wildlife in
Bwindi, as it provides livelihood for people who might otherwise be forced to exploit wildlife in the park.
I am selling this piece framed for $975, of which I will donate $500 to conservation projects in Bwindi
through Biocultural Conservation Institute, where I am on the board.
